“Atlantis” is voor Jerry een beetje een experiment, omdat hij zelden of nooit werkt vanuit een bron buiten zichzelf. De schilderijen die te zien zullen zijn, hebben daarom als serie een onderzoekend karakter maar zijn an sich wel ‘af’. Aanleiding voor het werk dat hij heeft gemaakt, is de foto “Plaster”. In het beeld dringen beladen begrippen als ‘verval’ en ‘vergankelijkheid’ zich erg op. Aanvankelijk was hij van plan één groot schilderij te maken, van 260 x 180 cm. Zijn insteek was wat formeel: een reactie op het beeldformaat, op het licht en op het monumentale karakter van de foto. Maar, zoals dat eigenlijk altijd gaat, veranderde tijdens het proces zijn ideeën over wat hij aan het doen was. Langzamerhand vormde zich een verhaal rond het gegeven ‘begin’. “The Shades of Silence” van Elise van der Linden zijn zonder meer plekken waar iets kan gedijen. In verval ligt vaak de kiem voor iets nieuws.
De schilderijen gaan over ontstaan, ontkiemen, ontspruiten, opkomen. Althans, dat is wat Jerry wil aanraken. Hij stuitte bij toeval op de zin “Galaxies that fly, crawl, and swim”, en besefte dat dit in essentie is wat hij nu probeert te schilderen:- atmosfeer in beweging.
“Atlantis” is a bit of an experiment for Jerry because he seldom or never works from a source outside himself. The paintings that will be on show therefore have a researching character as series but are in themselves ‘finished’. Reason for the work he has made is the photo “Plaster”. In the image, laden concepts such as ‘decay’ and ‘transience’ are very important. Initially he intended to make one large painting, of 260 x 180 cm. His approach was somewhat formal: a reaction to the image format, the light and the monumental character of the photograph. But, as always, his ideas changed during the process about what he was doing. Gradually a story formed around the given ‘beginning’. “The Shades of Silence” by Elise van der Linden are simply places where something can flourish, and in decline is often the seed for something new.
The paintings are about origination, germination, sprouting, and emergence. At least, that is what Jerry wants to touch. He accidentally stumbled upon the phrase “Galaxies that fly, crawl, and swim”, and realized that this is essentially what he is trying to paint: – atmosphere in motion.
